MEDWAY 2, DOVER-SHERBORN 1: Grey Benjamin and Bradley Pearson scored second-half goals, both assisted by Brian Rojee, as unbeaten Medway rallied to edge host Dover-Sherborn in a Tri-Valley League match.
Cam Bielski scored 17:48 into the game, assisted by Sam Hunter, to give D-S a 1-0 halftime lead. Benjamin 7:22 into the second half to tie it and then Pearson netted the game-winner at 30:37.
Max Roche, Pearson and Pat Halloran were standouts for Medway (3-0). Connor Van Duzer and Connor Heinlien played solid games for for DS (1-1-1).
Brian Rojee and Derek Phillips also scored while Grey Benjamin had two assists for the Mustangs (4-0, 3-0 TVL). Goalie Nolan Lynch made four saves for Medway while Malcolm Cheney had four saves for the Hillers. Will Relle had an unassisted tally for Hopkinton.
The Mustangs (5-0, 4-0) got on the scoreboard at 32:20 when Phillips scored from senior Max Roche. Greg Benjamin then scored from Roche at 54:15 before senior Pat Halloran scored from Phillips at 57:26.
Dino Roffo scored an unassisted goal for the Panthers at 28:06.
Medway junior midfielder Brian Rojee netted his team's second goal in the 64th minute, which was assisted by junior striker Mike O'Brien.
Senior goalie Nolan Lynch had three saves for the Mustangs (7-0-1, 6-0-1 TVL).
Goalie James Laughlin had a game-high 15 saves for Westwood.
The Mustangs, who were coming off a tough one-goal loss to Medfield on Friday, had a chance to get back to their winning ways when they hosted Tri-Valley League foe Dover-Sherborn Tuesday night. Raider junior striker Cam Bielski, however, had other ideas, as he scored two goals, one in each half, to lead D-S to a 2-1 victory over the league's top team.
"It's a huge win for us," said D-S coach Joe Gruseck. "That's a very big win, especially for our confidence and the fact that we're looking for consistency. That couldn't have gone any better for us. They're a great team and they'll rebound, but for our guys that's a big win."
Early on, Medway (8-2-1, 8-2-1 TVL) looked to work the wings and kept the ball in the Raiders' defensive half of the field. Just over six minutes in, though, D-S (6-4-1, 6-4-1) scored the night's first goal.
Sophomore midfielder Sam Hunter played a ball over the top of the Mustang defense that Bielski and Medway senior keeper Nolan Lynch (2 saves) raced toward. The speedy striker beat Lynch to it and poked the ball past the goalie to give the Raiders an early lead.
"I got good service," said Bielski. "I just got by the defenders and I was easily able to slide it in the net. It was nothing special."
"Cam's been our leading goal-scorer since he was a freshman," said Gruseck. "He's really matured. If not the best player in the league, he's got to be right up there. Every team we play double-teams him and he still manages to get things done. We're happy he's only a junior."
The Mustangs had a good scoring chance in the 30th minute when they were awarded a free-kick 45 yards from the goal. Senior midfielder Max Roche played the ball into the box and it found the head of senior midfielder Derek Phillips. His header had power, but not accuracy, and went straight at D-S senior goalie Jake Jordan (13 saves).
Less than three minutes later, Mustang junior defender Cody Young made a surging run through the midfield and unleashed a hard right-footed shot that Jordan had to tip over the crossbar.
"We didn't take the opportunity of a few chances we had," said Medway coach Brad Shoenfelt, whose team trailed 1-0 at the half. "Their keeper came up big a few times. He's very strong and he definitely took away some of our chances in the middle."
In the 43rd minute, a cross by Phillips was bobbled by Jordan and fell to senior striker Pat Halloran who, faced with a tight angle and close range, fired his shot high and wide.
Two minutes later, Bielski was at it again.
Sophomore defender Jake Grossbaum played a long through ball that, once again, resulted in a footrace between Bielski and Lynch. For the second time, Bielski beat Lynch to the ball and slotted a calm left-footed finish past the keeper.
Medway, however, didn't go away easily, and in the 56th minute got one back. Senior midfielder Grey Benjamin slipped a beautiful ball through to Halloran, who took two touches before firing the ball into the lower far corner.
"We put away one of the best chances that we had," said Shoenfelt. "It was a great finish and a great ball to Pat."
The Mustangs had a chance to tie the game in the 71st minute when a loose ball in the box fell to Halloran. Jordan saved his shot, but the rebound came out to Roche. Roche fired it at semi-open net, but the ball hit a crowd of players in front of the net and flew out of bounds.
"We were playing our game early on, but that first goal really took the wind out of our sails," said Phillips. "We never really got back into it until late in the game and we just couldn't execute."
Phillips scored his first goal at 8:46, assisted by senior captain midfielder Max Roche. Wellesley knotted the score in the 46th minute, as midfielder Kristoffer Enger scored an unassisted goal. Philips netted the game-winning goal at 48:30, again assisted by Roche.
Senior goalie Nolan Lynch had seven saves for Medway (10-2-1). Wellesley goalie Andre Suttle totaled six saves in net.
